Oz Roller Girls Top Salty Broads 187-143 For Ninth Straight Home Win


OSWEGO — The Oz Roller Girls scored their ninth straight home win in holding off Shoreline Roller Derby’s tenacious Salty Broads 187-143 on Aug. 18 in Oswego’s Crisafulli Rink.

The victory lifts Oz’s record to 7-4, clinching a winning record in each of the league’s first two seasons. The Salty Broads dropped to 6-2 on the year.

Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy led Oz and all scorers with 115 points. Crushed Red Pepper added 37 points for the home team, with SarahNova also in double figures with 28. Squeaky van Hurtin’ paced the Salty Broads with 95 points, with Death Rochelle chipping in 26 and Katniss Everspeed 19.

Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy gave the Oz Roller Girls a 8-3 lead on the first jam before a 15-point effort by Squeaky van Hurtin’ gave the Salty Broads an 18-8 advantage. Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy responded with a 24-point jam that put Oz back in front 32-18. That was the start of a second half that saw the two hard-hitting, hard-skating teams trade the lead several times.

Five points by Katniss Everspeed and another 15-point jam by Squeaky van Hurtin’ enabled the Salty Broads to retake the lead at 38-32. Crushed Red Pepper responded with a 10-point jam to put Oz back in front 42-38. But the Salty Broads retook the lead at 59-53 on an 18-point jam by Squeaky van Hurtin. Four points by Katniss Everspeed and three by Death Rochelle gave the Salty Broads their biggest advantage at 66-53.

But Oz seized the momentum toward the end of the first half. A 10-point jam by SarahNova pulled Oz within 66-63, then Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy posted four points to put Oz back in front 67-66. Another 10-point jam by SarahNova stretched the lead to 77-66. In the most pivotal jam of the night, Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy and the Oz blocking line piled up a huge 28-point jam to open a 105-66 lead at halftime.

The two teams came out of the locker room and both played solid defense until Death Rochelle was able to post a 13-point jam to pull the Salty Broads within 109-83. Three jams later, Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy broke for 14 points, followed by eight for SarahNova, then 20 more for Mandy to expand Oz’s lead to 152-94.

But the visitors from Connecticut traveled too far just to go quietly. A 29-point outburst by Squeaky van Hurtin’, followed by a seven-point jam by Katniss Everspeed pulled the Salty Broads within 156-133. But a 13-point jam by Crushed Red Pepper that gave Oz a 173-139 advantage all but sealed the deal. Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy took lead jammer in the final jam, scored five points and called it off for the final 187-143 tally.

Her second consecutive 100+ point performance earned Masso-Kiss-Tic Mandy the Jammer MVP for Oz, with teammate Bat Attitude named Heavy Hitter. Death Rochelle won Jammer MVP and Painya Collida the Heavy Hitter honors for the Salty Broads.
