PARISH, NY – At 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to a one-car fatal motor vehicle accident at the intersection of County Route 26 and Smokey
Hollow Road in the Town of Parish.
A vehicle being operated by 51-year-old John D. Whitehead was traveling northbound on County Route 26 and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of County Route 26 and Smokey Hollow Road, deputies said.
The vehicle struck the guard rail and ultimately came to rest in a small body of water.
Mr. Whitehead was transported from the scene by ambulance and later died as a result of this accident.
The Town of Parish Fire Department, Town of Mexico Fire Department, Sandy Creek Fire Department, Hastings Fire Department, SOVAC Ambulance, McFee Ambulance and the New York State Police also responded to the accident.
The investigation is ongoing.
