Phelps Picks Up Big Win On Opening Night At Brewerton; Scott, Devendorf And Denton Grab Victories

By Dave Medler
BREWERTON, NY – A huge crowd filled the stands after a long off season as the Brewerton Speedway kicked off the 2012 season on Friday night on Ehrlich Pest Control night.

On the race track, Ryan Phelps out of Newark, NY served notice that he plans on being a contender every week, as he picked up the big win in the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified 35 lap feature, backing up his victory in the 2011 season ending SUNY Canton Hurricane 100.

Other winners at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon” were, Ryan Scott, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Tim Devendorf, Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites and Stephen Denton, Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

Billy Decker and Ryan Phelps led the stout Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified field down to Dave Farney’s green flag, with Decker grabbing the early advantage in the 35 lap feature.  Decker’s lead was short lived as Phelps blasted around Decker one lap later to be scored the leader.

With 5 laps on the scoring tower, Phelps and Decker ran nose to tail, Jimmy Phelps ran alone in third with Alan Johnson and Chris Hile showing in the top-five.

By lap 10 Phelps, Decker and Jimmy Phelps broke away as they started catching the back of the field, Johnson and Hile still ran fourth and fifth.

One lap later, lap 11, Johnson shredded a right rear while running fourth. He headed pit side for a tire change and rejoined the field.

On lap 14, defending track champion, Matt Sheppard and Larry Wight suffered flats and were forced to the pits for tire changes.

At the halfway point, Phelps was on rails running the top of the speedway as he opened a half a straightaway lead over Decker, Hile and Phelps.

With 10 laps to go, Phelps was able to start putting lapped cars between himself and Decker , Hile, Phelps and Matt Fink.

Over the remaining laps with no yellows to bunch the field up, Ryan Phelps cruised under the checkers with Billy Decker, Chris Hile, Jimmy Phelps and Peter Britten who came on late, rounding out the top-five.

While most Modifed drivers have races under their belt this season, this was Phelps first race out of the box in 2012 in his Big Red Towing/NAPA/Stadium International Trucks/ Tracey Road Equipment/ Dave Miller Auto Body/ Bombadils Tavern/ No.99.

“This is the same car we won the “Hurricane 100” in, we just did the same thing, and we were good,” said Phelps in victory lane. “The car felt real good in the hot-laps and the heat, and felt good in the feature. It was a lot of fun out there.”

“The top side worked good for us, we had to move around there a little bit at the end,” Phelps talking about putting cars a lap down. The car was really good, I can’t thank my dad (Roger Phelps) crew and sponsors enough. We will take this win, enjoy it then get back to work for the next one.”

Besides Ryan Phelps win, the biggest cheer came for Chris Hile. Over the off season a huge fire burned the family hauler to the ground and damaged their trailer that they were refurbishing. Through a fund raiser, and the racing family coming together, the Hile family was able to rebound and be at the speedway on opening night.

In the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified 15 lap feature, Rob Keller grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and looked to be heading to victory lane. Ryan Scott was able to chase down Keller and drive by him with three laps to go picking up his second ever win at the Brewerton Speedway. Keller, Kevan Cook, Chris Fleming and Jason Amidon rounded out the top-five.

Defending Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite track champion Tim Devendorf showed that he has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. Devendorf took the lead from Joe Isabell  on lap 6 and never looked back in the 20 lap feature. Sterling Miller, Joe Garafolo, Joe Isabell and Lowell Zehr chased Devendorf across the line.

Stephen Denton put his car in victory lane ten times in 2011on his way to the Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stock track title. On Friday night he once again put his Saab in victory lane, leading every lap of the 15 lap feature. Skip DeGroff, Jessica Redhead, Zak Petrie and Tim Dunn finished second through fifth.

This coming Friday night, April, 27, Ferris Mowers presents an action packed night of racing action featuring , the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites and Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stocks.
