The Phoenix Central School District is setting the bar high in its pursuit for academic excellence and other school districts across the state haven taken notice.
Amplify Learning Core Knowledge, which is a rigorous English language arts program aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards, helps students develop better literacy skills.
The program is in its second year of implementation at Michael A. Maroun Elementary School and progress is already being seen, according to Principal Mary Stanton.
“The teachers are recognizing significant gains in students reading fluency, skills and writing,” Stanton said. “Each day, students participate in a one-hour skills class, one hour of listening and learning, and one hour of guided reading and independent reading.”
Since the PCSD is on the cutting edge with this educational initiative, administrators and teachers from area school districts came to Phoenix recently to observe MAM teachers and students in action.
“As a building leader of outstanding, truly hardworking and dedicated teachers of young children, I always had a vision/dream that Maroun Elementary would be recognized by other districts as a place to visit and learn from our classrooms,” Stanton said. “I couldn’t be more proud! It’s a great time for our teachers to shine and it’s also wonderful to see districts collaborating and supporting one another.”
