Phoenix Hosts Locktoberfest Festival Oct. 1


PHOENIX – The village of Phoenix will celebrate its canal heritage with Locktoberfest, a day of music, crafts, food, and street performers from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Oct. 1.

The event is one in a series of community festivals celebrating the fall harvest season along the state canal system and is sponsored by the village of Phoenix,  Phoenix Rising, Taste NY, the New York State Canal Corp., I Love New York, and the state Department of Agriculture and Markets.

“This one-day community festival will be held on our unique island setting and throughout the downtown streets,” said village administrator Jim Lynch. “The event features close to two dozen local and regional food trucks and eateries, dozens of crafters and vendors, street performers, children’s games, a cornhole tournament, and even a visit from the Clydesdale horses of our local Riverside Ranch.”

Visitors will be able to tour Lock 1 and the drawbridge throughout the day.

The entertainment line-up features Rhonda Helene, Just Joe, Frank N Beans, The Blind Goats, Flat Face and the Shemp Dells, Subsoil, American Eagle Band, Piece of Mind and more.

The stage will be located on State Street, across from the beer garden which will serve NYS local craft beers, wines and ciders. Sponsors include Genesee Brewhouse, Samuel Adams beer, and Onondaga Beverage.

Onondaga Beverage is sponsoring a 32-team cornhole tournament with prizes paid to the top finishers.

Entry is $10 per team.

Other activities include an apple pie baking contest, dunk tank, sidewalk chalk demonstration, children’s games, and displays by various non-profit agencies, churches, and military organizations.

A variety of festival foods will be available, including apples and treats from Behling’s Orchards as well as steamed clams, fried clams, salt potatoes, frog legs, fried dough, cotton candy, gourmet donuts, Byrne dairy chocolate milk, steak sandwiches, chili, baked goods, barbecued chicken, wraps, salads, walk-away tacos, fish tacos, bratwurst and sauerkraut, potato pancakes and much more.
