Phoenix Instrumental Music Students Earn Several Honors

Students from the John C. Birdlebough High School in the Phoenix Central School District have recently earned several outstanding musical distinctions and honors.

Twenty instrumental music students were selected to represent the school district at the Oswego County Music Educators Association (OCMEA) All-County Band Festival.

A total of eight school districts and 85 students were selected participate in the All-County Band, meaning that students from the Phoenix District made up nearly a quarter of the entire band.

The 25-member JCB Varsity Jazz Band participated in the New Hartford Jazz Festival and received a score of 96 out of 100 for their performance.

This earned the band a gold rating, the highest possible rating at the festival. This is the band’s third straight year participating in this event and represents the third straight gold rating.

Incidentally, musicians Michael Mironti, alto saxophone, and Brian Breen, flute, were presented with All-Star Awards at the festival.

Congratulations also goes to musicians Rachel Isbell, clarinet, and Eric Hillpot, French horn for being selected to represent the school district at the OCMEA All-County Orchestra Festival.
The following six JCB students were also selected to join students from several Central New York counties for the New York State School Music Association’s Area All-State Festival:

Shaun Turner, percussion; Paul Barber, trumpet, Rachel Isbell, clarinet; Jacob Nicolini, trumpet; Derick White, French horn; and Matti Gleason, oboe.

Students Paul Barber and Rachel Isbell earned the honor to represent the district in a state-wide band at the New York State Band Director’s Association (NYSBDA) Honor Band Festival.

Barber played the trumpet while Isbell played the clarinet in the 85-student state-wide band.
