A tradition of excellence continues for the Phoenix Central School District. The district’s percussion ensemble captured first place in the New York State Percussion Circuit Championships on April 6.
The 22-member state champion group consists of students in grades eight through twelve who are more than just musicians.
Luke Dennis, the ensemble’s director, describes each member as “part actor, part athlete, and part musician.”
For their performance this season the ensemble presented a show titled “The Beast Within.” Through music and movement the students captured what happens what anger builds within and can no longer be hidden.
Judges score each ensemble on a variety of criteria including visual appeal, general effect, and sound.
Phoenix earned a gold medal at the state championships with an overall score of 89.7, beating out the second place team by a mere tenth of a point.
The impressive state champion is just one distinction in the ensemble’s long-standing tradition of success.
The ensemble actually entered this year’s season as the three-year reigning champion of their class.
