Physician Assistant Dan Birklin has joined Orthopedic Surgeon Shawn Mills, MD., and the Advanced Orthopedic Group, located in the Oswego Health Services Center (HSC), adjacent to Oswego Hospital.
Birklin, a Central New York native, earned his physician assistant degree from LeMoyne College. “Orthopedics is what I really enjoy doing,” Birklin said. “Throughout my physician assistant training and during each of the divisions of medicine I rotated through, I knew that orthopedics was a great career match for me. It’s about fixing things and I like being able to help people improve their quality of life and get them back to what they enjoy most in life.”
In addition to his physician assistant training, Birklin is well-versed in sport injuries as he earned his undergraduate degree in athletic training from SUNY Cortland. After a successful career as a professional athletic trainer, he desired a more active role in healthcare and the management of athletes and their injuries, became a physician assistant specializing in orthopedics and sports medicine.
Since joining Advanced Orthopedic Group, Birklin has been assisting Dr. Mills, an accomplished orthopedic surgeon in the practice’s office, located in suite 270 of the HSC. He also supports Dr. Mills in Oswego Hospital’s seven-suite surgery center.
“Dan is a very competent and skilled physician assistant,” said Dr. Mills. “Our patients have found him to be very caring and willing to listen to their needs. I am very glad to have him join our group and know he will be instrumental as we redefine orthopedic care at Oswego Hospital.”
Dr. Mills joined the Oswego Hospital medical staff in September and has more than 15 years of experience performing a wide range of orthopedic procedures. Since his arrival, Dr. Mills has already performed hip replacements, major shoulder surgery including replacement, as well as complete reconstruction of severe trauma injuries.
Dr. Mills has been board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery since 2001. He offers surgical management options for advanced arthritis with joint replacements, including total hip and knee replacements, as well as shoulder replacements. Dr. Mills is a long standing proponent and practitioner of Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) procedures, which involve specialized orthopedic equipment and training.
Prior to entering his clinical practice of orthopedic surgery, Dr. Mills completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center (UMMC). He completed fellowship training in emergency medicine and critical care in addition to his surgical internship while at UMMC.
