Oswego, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team came up just short 1-0 against No. 1 Plattsburgh on Friday night in the Campus Center Ice Arena. Oswego’s loss drops its record to 16-7-1 overall with a 10-4-1 mark in ECAC West competition while the Cardinals improve to 22-1-1, 14-1-0.
Plattsburgh got all it would need with 28 seconds left to play in the second period. Oswego had just finished killing its sixth penalty of the night without harm eight seconds prior to Chelsea VanGlahn netted the eventual game-winner. The goal was VanGlahn’s 11th of the season and she was assisted by Giovana Senese.
Both squads’ defensive special teams shined, with the Lakers avoiding damage on eight different penalties while the Cardinals killed five penalties themselves.
Plattsburgh was able to outshot Oswego 35-18 in the contest, with the Lakers’ Bridget Smith finishing with 34 saves. Smith’s 34 saves set a new career-high for the junior.
The Cardinals started Sydney Aveson between the pipes, stopping 18 shots en route to the shutout.
Oswego and Plattsburgh will duke it out again at 3 p.m. on Saturday in the regular season finale at the Campus Center. It will be Senior Day for the Lakers, as they will honor nine seniors in a post-game ceremony.
