Senator Gillibrand Announces Several Of Her Defense Priorities Included In Soon-To-Pass Fy2023 Bipartisan Funding Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C.— Today, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Chair of the Senate Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee, is announcing that several of her defense priorities were included in the soon-to-pass FY2023 bipartisan funding bill.

This includes $7 million for the Department of Defense’s Tick-Borne Disease Research Program (TBDRP) and additional funding for tick-borne disease research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Despite the high number of Lyme disease cases in the United States, with over 90,000 cases of Lyme being reported in New York State alone over the last two decades, federal investment in research and prevention remains at just $322 per case. Gillibrand also helped secure nearly $1.6 billion for peer-reviewed medical research in the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program.

Notably, Gillibrand also helped lead the bipartisan push to fully fund U.S.-Israel missile defense cooperation. Israel’s missile defense system is made up of four operational layers: Iron Dome, David’s Sling, Arrow 2 and now Arrow 3, and funding for these programs will reflect what is requested in President Biden’s budget.

“This vital defense funding allocated in the FY2023 appropriations bill will help save lives, strengthen U.S. national security, and further advances in research and development across the medical field,”  Senator Gillibrand said. “As chair of the Senate Armed Services Personnel Subcommittee, I’m proud I was able to help secure over $2.7 billion to ensure our armed forces operate in a manner worthy of our service members’ dedication and to help keep Americans healthy and safe.”
