ALBANY, NY – Senator John W. Mannion today announced his legislation (S3114A) to improve access to New York State government websites for people with disabilities has been signed into law. It is Senator Mannion’s twenty-second bill signed into law in 2023.

The new law requires all state agencies to comply with the most current version of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) adopted by the World Wide Web Consortium. WCAG represents the global benchmark for website accessibility, ensuring inclusivity for people with disabilities. The new state law bolsters and expands the existing standards, as currently required by Executive Order and the State Technology Law, ensuring better and more consistent accessibility.

Senator John W. Mannion, Chairman of the Disabilities Committee, said, “Equal access to information and resources is a cornerstone of a just society. Unfortunately, many individuals with disabilities struggle to access critical state services due to inaccessible website design. This law ensures New York adheres to international accessibility standards, guaranteeing that everyone can navigate state websites and utilize the services they need.”

Senator Mannion’s legislative achievements signed into law in 2023 include measures to support the disabilities community, promote government transparency and accountability, and improve the quality of life in Central New York.
