OSWEGO – One year ago, Premier Living Suites of Oswego, established a tobacco-free policy within and around its student housing grounds.
The policy prohibits smoking within 20 feet of the building and failure to comply could result in a fine.
This change was made through a collaboration with the Tobacco Free Network of CNY and is in an effort to improve the health of the community, encourage smoking cessation, and safeguard the living conditions of SUNY Oswego’s students.
“Secondhand smoke can be a serious problem in multi-unit housing. Smoke can migrate from other units and common areas and travel through doorways, cracks in walls, electrical lines, plumbing, and ventilation systems, thus exposing non-smoking tenants to the harms of secondhand smoke”, said Tyler Ahart, Tobacco Free Community Specialist with the Network.
Premier Living Suites offers students a fully-furnished home away from home while providing a safe study environment, and a fun, friendly social community. Just minutes from the SUNY Oswego campus, the 18 four-bedroom suites have all the amenities a student needs to thrive.
The Tobacco Free Network of CNY is an organization that works to foster tobacco-free environments within Oswego, Onondaga and Cayuga counties.
TFN provides technical assistance, policy writing services, and signage at no cost to businesses, landlords, and municipalities.
