By Senator Patty Ritchie
This week, I bring you important information for protecting your security and your privacy as a gun owner.
Beginning on May 15, personal information contained on your gun permit, including your home address, could be available to any member of the public who asks for it.
Thankfully, gun owners can now protect the privacy of their personal information.
In order to take advantage of this measure, and to protect the privacy and security of yourself, your family, home or business, you need to complete a gun permit privacy form.
For information on how to have my office mail you a form, or how to download a form yourself, please visit my website, www.ritchie.nysenate.gov, or call my office at (315) 782-3418.
Once completed, the form can be delivered to the following agencies:
· Oswego County: County Clerk, 46 E. Bridge St., Oswego, NY 13126
· Jefferson County: Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, 718 Waterman Drive, Watertown, NY 13601
· St. Lawrence County: County Clerk, 48 Court St., Canton, 13617
If you’re a gun owner, I urge you to submit your form as soon as possible, as the personal information included on your gun permits could be released to anyone requesting it after May 15.
You’re probably familiar with the incident that created national headlines and made the need for this new law so apparent.
Late last year, a downstate newspaper published the names and address of tens of thousands of lawful gun permit holders in the region, something that in my opinion, was an invasion of personal privacy and created potentially dangerous situations for those involved.
Albany’s new gun control law, which I opposed, includes a number of new restrictions on the rights of lawful gun owners.
Many of those restrictions are overly burdensome and excessive, that’s why I voted no, and that’s why it’s more important than ever to safeguard your security and take this very important step to ensure your privacy is protected.
