OSWEGO, NY – Following a lengthy, but also rather busy offseason, Proud Motorsports will open its 2018 Small Block Supermodified campaign in the 30-lap Lighthouse Lanes SBS Series ‘May Meltdown’ at the Evans Mills Speedway Saturday, May 12.
For the second race in a row, team owner Tim Proud will pilot the Step One Creative No. 54 machine at Evans Mills with the 2017 graphics package on the car before regular pilot Camden Proud gets back behind the wheel with a brand new look at Oswego Speedway’s open practice May 19.
Proud is looking forward to again piloting the car at the North Country oval located just outside of the city of Watertown. The former Supermodified driver contended for the lead for several laps in the ‘Fall Brawl’ 50 event for the Lighthouse Lanes SBS Series last September.
“Things went really well last Fall at Evans Mills,” Proud said. “We were fast all day long, got second in the heat, and battled for the lead in the feature for a while before getting into a jingle on one of the restarts. The Step One Creative car has been fast there so far, so it’s been fun. Hopefully we can stay out of trouble this weekend and contend for the win.”
In September 2016 Proud got back behind the wheel of a race car for the first time since 2004 as part of a Race of Champions event at the Oswego Speedway. Tim’s return to competition was rather successful, turning laps consistently at 18.9 seconds and also bringing home a heat race win that afternoon. The longtime Oswego car owner gathered a handful of top fives in SBS competition at the ‘Steel Palace’ in the early stages of his career.
Following a rainout at Oswego just minutes after the preliminary victory, Proud then turned to the Lighthouse Lanes SBS Series for more action in 2017, but was bitten by the rain twice; first at Evans Mills Speedway on Father’s Day and then again at the Spencer Speedway just a few weeks later. He finally was able to compete in the ‘Fall Brawl,’ charging through the field to a ninth place finish after the aforementioned restart stack up.
For the 2018 season, Proud again will be the full-time crew chief and mechanic on the No. 54 Small Block Super at Oswego Speedway as Camden continues to knock on the door for his first career feature win. The car owner / driver pair scored three second place finishes in 2017, which allowed Proud Motorsports to gather a third place effort in the overall point standings last season.
Following the addition of a Supermodified to Proud Motorsports this past March, Tim will also pilot the soon to be No. 04 in select testing sessions before Camden aims to qualify for this September’s 62nd running of the Budweiser International Classic 200.
The scheme on the car will resemble the final family owned Supermodified Proud piloted back in 2002.
Action at Evans Mills Speedway gets under way at 4:30 p.m. Saturday with the start of hot laps before heat racing will see the green flag promptly at 6 p.m.
Pit gates open at 3:30 p.m. with passes available for $30. General admission seating is $10 and all kids 15 and younger are free.
