The Pulaski Middle/Senior High School auditorium was abuzz with excitement as student musicians performed several current billboard hits during the recent spring pops concert.
Sixth grade girls kicked off the evening with a vocal performance of Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off,” followed by the entire sixth grade chorus’ rendition of “Play it Again” and “Centuries.”
Under the direction of Jack Jennings, the senior high school jazz band took the stage for three energetic, upbeat songs.
According to Jennings, nearly 70 percent of the jazz band members graduated in 2014.
However, this year’s musicians rose to the challenge.
“These kids have really stepped up,” he said. “They’ve done a tremendous job.”
Performing songs like “Mr. Nice Guy” and “Area 51,” the jazz band had the crowd tapping its feet and grooving to the music.
In a spoof of the SNL skit starring Will Farrell, the performance even featured Dan Nicholson playing “more cowbell,” to the delight of the audience.
The crowd remained engaged throughout the evening of music, as performances by the seventh and eighth grade chorus (“Take me to Church and “The Hanging Tree”) received loud ovations.
Rounding out the evening of pop music were the seventh through 12th grade women’s chorus, the ninth through 12th grade chorus, the senior high chorus, and a group performance of “Hallelujah.”
