OSWEGO, NY – Recognizing Oswego County is pleased to announce that Jenna Kain has been selected as the community champion for November.
Each month, Recognizing Oswego County uses this recognition effort as a platform for emphasizing the wonderful work that is happening in Oswego County to promote the health and wellness of children, families and adults.
The theme for November was family role modeling/mentoring/peer support.
Kain is the owner of Kain’s Photography in Oswego.
Aside from her professional success she is also a positive role model for families in the community.
Kain is an active member and volunteer at the Oswego Alliance Church.
Along with her husband, Kain leads a marriage group focused on deepening relationships between spouses.
Kain said she noticed there were a lot of young moms who went to their church and she had an idea of connecting them to form a group where moms could get to know each other and develop relationships.
That idea led to the formation of the Oswego Mom’s Group.
A survey at one of the first meetings revealed that many moms didn’t have a close friend or confidant, so she knew this was an important effort.
The group, which is now more than a year old, connects families in the Oswego County community.
They organize play dates, community family events and mom nights out.
Some of the events have included apple picking, BOGO night for moms, cookie swaps, freezer swaps, sledding and weekly trips to Oswego County parks.
The church supports the group but it is open to the entire community.
The Oswego Mom’s Group also has a facebook page, which is an avenue for any mom to ask for advice and get support from other moms.
Recently, Kain and her husband signed up with an international organization to move to western Asia.
Jenna hopes to start a mom’s group where she is moving and use her business skills that she has acquired from running her photography studio to teach women there how to start businesses in order to be self sustaining.
Her departure will be a loss to the community, but she said that Oswego is her home and they intend to come back.
Recognizing Oswego County focuses on the positive things that are being done in the community.
Each month, the group selects a theme.
Guest speakers are invited to attend monthly meetings to share the good work they are doing and nominations are solicited for Community Champions.
This month, ROC would like to thank the following guest speakers: Patricia Waters from SUNY Oswego’s Mentor-Scholar Program; Oscar Vergara from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Onondaga County; Lisa Seguin from the Family Services Support Council; and Jon Gilmore from Catholic Charities’ Relatives Raising Relatives Program.
For the month of December, ROC is soliciting nominations of exceptional individuals or organizations working to improve the community in the area of financial wellness.
To nominate a person or group for recognition for December, contact Abby Jenkins at [email protected]
Nominations are due by December 10.
