Red Dragons Top Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. — The Oswego State women’s basketball team dropped its contest to the Red Dragons of Cortland, 80-69, on Saturday afternoon in Max Ziel Gymnasium.

With the defeat, the Lakers fall to 3-12 and 1-7 in the conference. Cortland’s record now stands at 11-3 and 6-1.

Oswego came out of the gates on fire in the first quarter and lead the second best team in the conference by eight when the end of period buzzer rang.

During the time frame, the team shared the ball with four different players getting on the board in the quarter.

Heading to half with just under four minutes remaining in the second quarter, Cortland began finding the hoop with consistent rhythm. It eventually went on a 16-0 run to take over the lead.

The Lakers, which led by 11 points on four different occasions prior to the run, were unable to muster a comeback against the Red Dragons.

Tayler Sorell found the basket three times from behind the arc to accumulate nine points in the first. She rounded up the contest with 21 points by way of hitting another four 3-pointers, which is her second straight game with seven treys. It is also the senior’s third-straight game with more than 20 points.

Courtney Ameele and Mary Mazzella also contributed throughout, with the two combining for 32 points, 13 boards, four assists and four steals.

Five other Lakers scored, including Allie Izzo and Monica Harvey, who both hit the only shots they attempted. Zana Dillard pulled down double-digit (14) rebounds for the seventh time in the last eight games.

Oswego will return to the court at 5:30 p.m. on Friday against SUNYAC-foe New Paltz.
