At a recent Fulton Rotary Club meeting, President Jerry Seguin thanked Ward Vuillemot, Past District Governor, of Rotary District 7150 and creator of ”Books for the World,” for his presentation to the club. “District 7150 Books for the World” was the brainstorm of Ward after visiting South Africa as a Group Study Exchange team leader and seeing what their Rotary clubs could accomplish in assisting children’s literacy. The purpose of “Books For The World” is to improve literacy in the world, currently concentrating in the Southern Africa area. It is a collaborative effort between Rotary Clubs, their affiliated youth clubs, and other community and service organizations to provide surplus children’s K – 6th grade picture/story and K – 12th grade textbooks to regions in the world that are in need of these materials to create opportunities for a better way of life.

The “District 7150 Books for the World” committee provides each participating club with instructions and delivery information. The local warehouse is in Lacona, NY (LASER Transit); they are then shipped to Rotary Books for the World located in Houston, Texas. In Houston they are combined and containerized with other donated books and shipped to the District 9300 Distribution Center in Johannesburg, Republic of South Africa. Any one in the Oswego County area who has children’s books in good condition may contact area coordinator, Richard Kemmis, at 592-4486.
