OSWEGO, NY – Russel Stannard, 76, of Sterling died Thursday June 19, 2014, in Oswego Hospital after a short illness.
Mr. Stannard was born in Boonville, NY, the son of the late William and Winifred Stannard.
He retired in 1995 as a chief lock operator for the NYS Canal Corp.
He served in the US Navy from 1955 until 1969.
Mr. Stannard was a member of the American Legion Post 1, Albany, NY, and past commander of the American Legion Post 658, Fair Haven. He was the Fair Haven village trustee from 1974 until 1978 during its bicentennial celebration.
Mr. Stannard is survived by his wife, Patricia Stannard of Sterling; children, Janice (Jeff Treasure) Skinner of Sterling, Darlene (Ron Dates) Burley of Martville, Lee Simpkins of Hannibal and Arica (Mark) Harteis of Oswego; sisters, June MacArthur of Oswego, Carol Brookes of Florida and Donna Cooke of Fair Haven; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial in Springbrook Cemetery will be private.
The arrangements are in the care of the Sugar and Scanlon Funeral Home, 147 W. Fourth St., Oswego.
