FULTON, NY – Senior Director of Oswego County Opportunities’ Health and Nutrition Department, Ellen Holst has announced that Samantha Sheggrud, P.A., has joined the medical staff at OCO’s Fulton Health Center.
Sheggrud, who holds a Masters Degree in Physician Assistant studies from LeMoyne College and a Bachelors Degree in Biology from SUNY Oswego, brings with her a considerable amount of experience in the medical field. Prior to joining the medical staff at OCO, Sheggrud served as a Physician Assistant in the surgery department at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse and as a Registered Respiratory Therapist at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse.
A one-time communication studies major at SUNY Brockport, Sheggrud said that her career path took a dramatic turn following an illness. “While I was still attending SUNY Brockport I developed a severe case of pneumonia. One of my lungs collapsed and I was in intensive care for three days. During that time was very impressed with care that I received and the actions of those of those who cared for me. I was intrigued by the hospital atmosphere, it inspired me to pursue a career in the medical field so that I too could make a difference and help others as they helped me,” explained Sheggrud.
Sheggrud’s desire to care for others and work closely with her patients was the motivation for her to be a part of the medical staff at OCO.
“Working in the surgery department I did not have the opportunity to interact with the patients and provide follow-up care as much as I would like to. When a friend of mine told me about OCO’s Fulton Health Center, I knew it would be a good fit for me. I enjoy that I have the opportunity to serve patients from pediatric to seniors, develop a medical relationship with them and gain a more complete knowledge of their medical needs,” she said.
At OCO’s Fulton Health Center Sheggrud says she sees approximately 14 patients a day and enjoys being able to serve this population. “Working here is a very rewarding experience. I empathize with many of our patients, as I know what it is like to need medical care without having health insurance. OCO’s Health Centers provide a valuable service for the community by helping our patients find the care they need. The Facilitated Enrollment Program is also an excellent resource,” said Sheggrud. “OCO’s Fulton Health Center is a great environment to work in; the staff are very talented, easy to work with, and always willing to help each other.”
Holst said that Sheggrud is proving to be a welcome addition to OCO’s medical staff and is impressed with the care and concern that she shows for her patients. “We are pleased to have Samantha on staff with us at our Fulton Health Center. Samantha comes to us from the Syracuse area with positive references and a track record and passion for providing quality care. She is learning about our practice at a positive pace and has been well received by patients and staff alike,” said Holst.
