Saturday’s High School Sports Roundup

Fulton’s boys soccer team wrapped up a successful weekend Saturday on their home turf.

The Red Raiders won their season-opening tournament by knocking off Central Square, 5-3.

Joe Sutton backed up Friday’s hat trick with another trio of goals to lead Fulton.  Paul Reynoso and Carson Vono, both new to varsity play, added goals.

Tyler French, back from an injury, stopped two shots.

For Central Square, Alex Steria, Tom Sager and Colin Teeter scored.  Zack Reed stopped five shots.

In the tournament’s other game, Oswego captured third place with a 5-0 shutout of Mexico.  Wes Smith and Mike Hart scored twice each for the Bucs, while Nat Harrington made three saves.

Tigers’ keeper Eamon Lacey turned away 15 shots.

In the day’s other boys game, Phoenix fell to Oneida, 5-1.  Kyle Fisk scored for the Firebirds.  Douglas Hillpot and Bryan Murray split 13 saves in goal.

On the girls’ side, Oswego fell in the title game of its season opening tournament.

Mercy was merciless in a 6-0 win.  Ariel Bouffard made 10 saves for the Lady Bucs, while Cassie Collins added five more saves.

Fulton’s girls took the third-place game, 2-1 over Watertown.  Christina Pensabene and Kayla Distin scored for Fulton.  Allyson Bricker turned away five of six shots.

There was one Saturday football game.  Mexico ran away with its opener, 57-22 over Holland Patent.

H-P pulled to within a touchdown before the Tigers exploded for 28 fourth-quarter points to cement the rout.

High school athletes take Sunday and the Labor Day Monday holiday off before returning to action on the first day of school.
