ONEONTA, N.Y. – Oneonta shot a scorching 55.2 percent from the floor in the second half to turn a three-point halftime lead into a 63-40 win over the Oswego State women’s basketball team Friday night. Meagan Stover (Jr., Lake George, N.Y.) paced the Lakers (11-10, 6-8 SUNYAC) with seven points, eight rebounds, and five assists. The Red Dragons’ (15-6, 13-2 SUNYAC) Samantha Szkotak posted a double-double with 20 points and 11 boards for the victors.
It was a low scoring first half, as both squads shot under 30 percent for the stanza. Oswego State went 7-for-26 (26.9 percent) compared to the Red Dragons, who shot 20.6 percent on 7-for-34 shooting. Oneonta took a small 23-20 lead into halftime due in large part to going 9-for-10 from the free-throw line and owning a 29-17 edge on the glass.
The Red Dragons started the second half on fire with a 14-2 run in which Szkotak scored six points to build a 37-22 lead with 16 minutes remaining. Jenna Rossi (Sr., Phoenix, N.Y.) drained a trey for three of her seven points to stop the streak, but Oswego State would get no closer than 11 points the rest of the way. The Lakers’ offensive struggles carried over into the second half, as they went 5-for-23 from the floor.
Oneonta capitalized on the second chances Oswego State gave it, as the Red Dragons scored 24 points off of Laker miscues and had 21 second-chance points.
Oswego State plays its final home game of the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. when it tips off against New Paltz.
