Second Half Surge Not Enough For Oswego State Women’s Soccer Team

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Samantha Veltri (So., Stony Point, N.Y.) scored  midway through the second half to lead a late surge by the Oswego State women’s soccer team (2-2-0), but it would not be enough as it fell to Hamilton (2-0-0), 2-1, Sunday afternoon.

Hamilton controlled possession in the first half, but was kept off the scoreboard until the 29th minute when Hannah Withiam scored on a shot from the top of the box that went just under the cross bar. Two minutes later, Alex Rimmer scored on an impressive bicycle kick with assists coming from Emily Foley and Rebecca Rees off of a Continental corner kick.

Oswego State came out in the second half with an increased sense of urgency, resulting in more shot attempts and fewer fouls. In the 65th minute, Hamilton substituted starting goalkeeper Liza Gergenti for Melanie Miller. The Lakers took advantage of the change and scored three minutes later. Shelly Bateman (Sr., Fulton, N.Y.) got a pass inside the box before sending the ball over to Veltri, whose initial shot was stopped by Miller. However, the rebound went right back to Veltri, who did not miss again, to cut Hamilton’s lead 2-1.

Minutes later, Raquel Vescio (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.) nearly leveled the game when her shot from the top of the box was punched into the air by Miller, ricocheted off the cross bar, and cleared out off danger by the Continentals .

Laker keeper Steph Hotaling (So., Fulton, N.Y.) ended with three saves in the loss. Hamilton starting goalkeeper Liza Gergenti did not face a shot in the opening 66 minutes, while Melanie Miller preserved the win by stopping two shots.

Oswego State looks to get back into the win column on the road against D’Youville on Thursday at 7 p.m.
