Second Period Outburst Gives Oswego State Women’s Ice Hockey 6-1 Win Against Castleton State

RUTLAND, VT. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team exploded for five goals in the second period to defeat Castleton State 6-1 on Saturday afternoon in the first round of the Rutland Herald Invitational in Rutland, Vermont. Balanced scoring was a key for the Lakers, as 12 different skaters recorded points during the contest. Junior goaltender Emi Williams (Anchorage, Alaska) turned in a solid performance between the pipes for Oswego State by making 22 saves. The Lakers, who improved to 5-5-0 overall, will face the winner of Adrian/Potsdam on Sunday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. The host Spartans fell to 3-9-1 overall.

After a sluggish start in the first period, Alex Szypryt (Fr., Bridgewater, N.J.) put Oswego State on the board at 2:44 in the second period for her first collegiate goal. Szypryt settled a pass from Kathryn Sbrocchi (So., Mississauga, Ont.) between both face-off circles, spun around, and whistled a wrist shot behind Castleton goaltender Katharyn Dembowski. Minutes later, Emily Grippin (Jr., Ithaca, NY) pounced on a rebound for her second tally of the season and a 2-0 lead.

For the remainder of the period, the Laker power play unit took over as it converted three of its next four opportunities into goals. Kelly Collins (So., Fairport, NY) found the back of the net at 8:09 for her fourth goal of the season. Teammates Aprilyn Gush (Sr., Carleton Place, Ont.) and Jillian Bergeron (So., Brockville, Ont.) both dished out assists. At 11:55 on the power-play, Tiarra Garrow (Sr., Morrisonville, NY) made it 4-0 with her second tally of the season. Collins and Sbrocchi both earned their second point of the contest assisting on the goal. Brenna Weber (Jr., Andover, Minn.) also cashed in on the power-play for her first goal of the season late in the second period at 19:16 with assists going to Bryanna Forrest (Fr., Anchorage, Alaska) and Sbrocchi to give Oswego State a 5-0 advantage heading into the third period.

Castleton State ended the shutout bid at the 7:29 mark when Jade Werger scored a breakaway goal on Laker goalie Emi Williams. However, Oswego State ended any chance of a comeback when Sarah Hannon (Jr., Lackawanna, N.Y.) wristed a shot between Dembowski’s pads at 10:53. Seniors Jenna Kirkwood (Chilliwack, B.C.) and Angie Friesen (Chilliwack, B.C.) were credited with assists on the play.

The Lakers finished the contest 3-for-9 on the power play, while forcing the Spartans to go 0-for-5. Williams improved to 5-3-0 on the season after stopping 22 shots compared to Dembowski, who fell to 2-7-0 overall after tallying 33 saves.
