Shaffer Makes History Winning UNOH All-Star Circuit Of Champions Race At Brewerton Speedway

By Dave Medler
BREWERTON, NY – The UNOH All-Star Circuit Of Champions made history Wednesday night at the Brewerton Speedway in front of a record crowd. In the long storied history of the track there had never been a 410 Sprint Car race till Wednesday night. Tim Shaffer’s name will now go into the record books as the first 410 A-Main winner.

Shaffer took the lead on the opening lap of the 30 lap A-Main and never looked back. The win was anything but easy, as he survived close calls on the speedway and constant challenges from David Gravel and Daryn Pittman for the popular win for the “Steel City Outlaw”.

Tim Shaffer and David Gravel brought the 24 car starting field down to the green with Shaffer grabbing the early lead in the 30 lap A-Main.

With 5 laps showing on the scoring tower, Shaffer built up a quarter straightaway lead, as Gravel, Daryn Pittman, Shawn Donath and Cap Henry chased the leader.

By lap 10, Shaffer and Gravel were in a tight battle for the lead as they also fought in traffic trying to put cars a lap down. Pittman, Henry and Donath ran third through fifth.

A yellow on laps 13 and 14 slowed the pace just before halfway.

On lap 19 disaster almost struck the leader. Shaffer had to get hard on the brakes for a car that got out of shape in front of him in turn one, that allowed Pittman to shoot by. A yellow came out at the same time allowing Shaffer to keep the lead.

A quick caution period would come out on lap 19. On the restart it looked like Shaffer was shot out of a cannon as he took off from the rest of the field.

With 9 laps to go and things going his way, Shaffer got sideways in turn one slowing his momentum, that allowed Pittman and Gravel to close quickly, making it a three-way battle for the lead.

One last yellow would fly with six laps to go putting Gravel, Pittman, Henry and Tony Stewart right with Shaffer for the dash to the finish.

Over the remaining laps, Shaffer ran a quick line on the bottom of one and two, and high in three and four hoping to hold on for the win. On the final lap Gravel threw everything he had at Shaffer but came up just short, as Shaffer was the first under the checkers. Daryn Pittman, Tony Stewart and Cap Henry finished third through fifth.

“It was a handful tonight with guys all around me,” Shaffer said about his tough win.” Hats off to my guys, Dave Lawrence and James Chambers. There is just the three of us out here, doing what it takes to get up front. They did a great job on the track, they gave us a top and a bottom where ever we needed to run”
