FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Oswego State women’s basketball dug itself an early hole that it was never able to find its way out of in a 63-51 loss to Fredonia Friday night. The Blue Devils opened the game with a 20-2 run, and never looked back to improve to 5-4 overall and 1-2 in the SUNYAC. With the loss, the Lakers saw their six-game winning streak come to an end, as they dropped to 6-2 overall and 3-1 in the league.
Oswego State struggled out of the gate, committing nine turnovers before putting its first point on the board when Jenna Rossi (Sr., Phoenix, N.Y.) hit a free throw with 12:27 on the scoreboard to make the score 17-1. Fredonia saw its lead swell to 24 points after Jaimie Warren scored two of her game-high 25 points in the paint to make the score 37-13 with 3:34 remaining in the first half.
Devon Kaminsky (Fr., Walton, N.Y.) scored on a putback before the end of the frame, as the Lakers went into halftime trailing 39-19. Oswego State also struggled from the floor going 6-for-29 (20.7 percent) in the frame, while the Blue Devils shot 47.1 percent (16-for-34).
The margin stayed the same throughout the second half until the Lakers scored the final seven points of the game with a Brittany Pritchard (Fr., Walworth, N.Y.) putback, an old-fashioned three-point play by Emily Birchall (Fr., Endwell, N.Y.) and a Paula Egelston (So., Fultonville, N.Y.) layup.
Kari Kipper (Jr., Loudonville, N.Y.) was the lone Laker to reach double figures as she scored 10 points, while Kayla Ryan (Sr., Schaghticoke, N.Y.) added nine points and 11 rebounds to the cause. Oswego State received contributions from its bench as it out-scored the Fredonia bench, 24-10.
In addition to Warren’s 25 points, she also tallied 14 boards, while Nicole Calbi registered 12 points and eight assists.
The Lakers return to action on Saturday afternoon when they face Buffalo State at 2 p.m.
