Small Fire Creates ‘Unusual Event’ at Nine Mile One

An unusual event was declared early Tuesday morning at the Nine Mile One nuclear plant in Scriba, according to Constellation Energy spokeswoman Jill Lyon.  An unusual event is the lowest of four levels of emergency at nuclear plants.

Lyon said a battery in a portable scissors lift caught fire.  The fire was put out quickly, but it created higher-than-allowable levels of carbon monoxide in the nuclear plant’s dry well area.

The unusual event was declared at 1:55 a.m. and ended at 2:26 a.m.  The event was reported to state and federal regulators, Lyon said.

Lyon said the reactor remained in a safe condition throughout the event.  The plant is shut down for its regular maintenance outage.  The scissors lift was being used by workers doing maintenance work.
