BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Oswego State women’s ice hockey team (10-11-2) got back in the win column with a 2-0 victory over Division I Sacred Heart University (10-15-1) Saturday afternoon. Freshman Bridget Smith (Hamburg, N.Y.) claimed her second shutout of the season after stopping 31 shots.
Oswego State’s power-play unit played a major part in the afternoon’s game, as both of goals were scored with the extra attacker. After a period and a half, Olivia Boersen (So., Stratford, Ont.) ended the deadlock with her second goal of the year when she scored the eventual game-winning, power-play goal at 12:18 in the second period unassisted.
Melissa Seamont (So., North Bay, Ont.) doubled the Lakers’ lead in the third with another power-play marker 6:13 into the third period.
The Oswego State penalty kill unit played a big part, as well, as it effectively killed off all six Pioneer opportunities.
Sacred Heart’s goalie Alexius Schutt finished with 41 saves in the loss.
Oswego State wraps up the regular season next weekend with a series at Elmira starting next Saturday at 7 p.m. before hosting its first-ever home ECAC West playoff game on Saturday, Feb. 25.
