Snow Sculpting SOS

Need help with your snow sculpting skills? With rain in the sky and green grass on the lawn in December, the potential for snow sculpting seems bleak but this is Central New York. Just wait for it!

CNY Arts Center expects at least enough of the white stuff to build a healthy snow man or two and have a lot of fun doing it when they host their first annual SNOW DAY event January 21 from 10am to 2pm at Fulton Alliance Church on Rte. 48 S. Planning for family fun to include a snow sculpture contest, a children’s carnival, art activities, storytelling, entertainment and more, the Arts group hopes to revive winter fun and create a new tradition for the community. And there is help for would-be sculptors – snow artists.

“The CNY Winter Guide to the Best of Upstate New York hit the stands with an article on the basics of Snow Sculpting which really emphasizes the fun we’re all expecting and reminds us it’s easier than we think,” said Nancy Fox, CNY Arts Center Director. “They say it’s like building out of sand and all we need is a little water and a few tools. We’ll supply the water and the snow, with a little help from the weather, but the community needs to join in the fun and register their teams. We’ll even give prizes for the best of the best. We’d like to see some friendly rivalry between businesses, school groups, service clubs, and families. “

Four winners will be chosen in the top spot in each of four categories. Teams of five in age categories under12, 12 to 20, 21 and up, and Family units of any age combination, will compete for a cash prize as the winner of their category. Teams can register online at the group’s web site – www.CNYArtsCenter.com. There is a fee to register.

CNY Arts Center formed as a group last spring with the goal of creating an arts center for all arts and all ages. “Not wanting to lost momentum during the winter, we began planning this Snow Day event, “ Fox continued. “With a focus on the arts from art displays to art projects, storytelling, music and more, this can brings us together during those cold winter months just for fun and still promote the arts. We’re optimistically planning a Blizzard Backup date of Jan 28th but who knows what to expect? This is Central New York!”
