OSWEGO, NY – Sophie Irene Smith, 92, a resident of Thomspon Road, Oswego Town, passed away Sunday May 4, 2014, at Oswego Hospital.
Born in Oswego, she was the daughter of the late Wojciech “Albert” and Frances (Gwodz) Nalle.
Sophie was baptized at St. Stephen’s Church and was raised Catholic.
She attended Oswego schools and worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse as a nursing assistant for 20 years.
She married Walter in 1958, then returned to Oswego and worked at Harr-Wood Nursing Home for 35 years retiring at the age of 68.
She always loved her work and treated it as a vocation.
Sophie had a green thumb and enjoyed her many plants and maintaining her yard and gardens.
As the matriarch of the Nalle family, she will be missed by many and remembered fondly.
She was widowed by both Walter Smith and George Smith.
She was predeceased by six brothers: Stephen Nalle, Joseph Nalle, Peter Nalle, Theodore Nalle Sr., Stanley and Francis Nalle, who died as children; and one sister, Ann Wood.
She is survived by many nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews and several great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.
Services will be held privately.
Burial will be in Oswego Town Rural Cemetery.
She was fond of animals especially her cocker spaniel “Pal-ie” and requests donations be made to the Oswego County SPCA, PO Box 442, Fulton, NY 13069.
