TIOGA CENTER, N.Y. – Sunday’s “Return of the ROC’n Concrete Rumble” at Shangri-La II Motor Speedway marks the second of five Championship series events for the Race of Champions Modified Tour. Matt Hirschman is the favorite for the title as usual, but the second generation racer from Northampton, Pa. has a new challenger in 2010.

ROC Modified points leader Matt Hirschman

Binghamton’s Daren Scherer finished the regular season part of the schedule 33 points behind Hirschman and he’s confident heading into this Sunday’s 4:00 p.m. start of the richest and most important race in Shangri-La II’s brief history. As with all RoC events, it will be an “all racing” night with no time trials and an all green flag 100-lap feature. Shangri-La II’s ASA Late Models, Sportsman Modifieds, and Street Stocks plus the INEX Legends will join the RoC stars in action.

Scherer’s Binghamton Mets-sponsored No. 3 is one of the most easily recognized cars on the RoC tour. He doesn’t run every week at Shangri-La II, but he’s made numerous appearances including a victory in the 2009 Fall Brawl event for the Sportsman cars. “Experience never hurts,” he commented, while noting the touring pros won’t exactly be handicapped. “It’s not really that difficult a track to learn, and we’ve already been there for one RoC race,” he said. Daren also expects to race his INEX Legends car at the Concrete Castle on Sunday.

Like most other drivers, Scherer doesn’t expect tire wear to be a factor, even at the 100 lap distance. “We’re planning to go all the way, because the track’s not very abrasive,” he explained. In addition, the “Return of the ROC’n Concrete Rumble” will be held late in the day, maybe finishing under the lights. By contrast, the 75-lap race in May won by Chuck Hossfeld took place in the middle of a hot afternoon. .

Adding interest on another front to Sunday’s proceedings is the fact that the unclaimed 50-50 winner’s share from the May RoC event is carried over, meaning the jackpot will start at over $1,000 and grow from there.

Gates open on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with practice at 2:30 p.m. and the first heat at 4:00 p.m. Shangri-La II Motor Speedway is located on top of the ridge on Route 17C, one mile east of Tioga Center. The track is easily accessed from Route 17, the Southern Tier Expressway, by taking Route 17C east from Exit 62 (Nichols) or Route 17C west from Exit 64 (Owego/Ithaca).
