OSWEGO – SUNY Oswego’s Metro Center has lined up two longtime Syracuse marketing leaders as trainers for a daylong sports marketing program March 9, just as area organizations gear up to promote golf tournaments, walkathons and myriad other sports-related events this spring and summer.
Joe LaGuardia, who was the New York State Fair’s director of marketing for more than 30 years, and Bill Motto, 18-year president of the Syracuse Sports Corp., will discuss the practical side of sports marketing 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Metro Center in the Atrium on Clinton Square in downtown Syracuse.
The Sports Event Marketing, Sales and Promotions program will examine effective strategies for planning fundraisers and other sports events. The fee is $199, and participants will receive certificates of completion. Attendees can bring a lunch or eat out during the one-hour break. To register or for more information, call the Metro Center at 399-4100 or visit www.oswego.edu/metro, click on Professional Development, then Sports Event Marketing.
“Our area certainly has a number of quality sports teams and a high level of community interest in sports that no doubt influences the interest and participation in fundraising events,” said James Jerose, Metro Center director. “As an example, we have a number of golf tournaments locally, and the majority are run by board members and other volunteers. This program can help those organizations be more efficient and effective at not only marketing their event, but also making it more profitable.”
LaGuardia, now executive director of the Syracuse Lakefront Development Corp., formerly was in sales, press relations and promotions for the Syracuse Eagles and Syracuse Blazers professional hockey clubs.
Motto, LaGuardia’s partner in Motto & LaGuardia Consulting, has served as president of the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame, and is affiliated with the North American Association of Sport Management, the National Association of Sports Commissions and other sport management associations.
