With a two round total of 157 at Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton this week, Chris Sova has earned the honor of representing Section III at the state tournament June 1 and 2 at Cornell University.
From a mass of over one hundred golfers, the field was cut down to 23 after a rain soaked Thursday afternoon. On day two, winds howled through a difficult Seven Oaks course, and the field was trimmed to the lowest 9 aggregate scores.
Sova’s 157 total tied him with Kevin Roy from Bishop Ludden for medalist honors.
A senior at Oswego, and a member of the varsity golf team for six years, this is Sova’s first trip to Cornell for the state competition. “I finally played well at this course,†Sova said with a smile as he walked toward the parking lot after his round.
But it was never easy out there for the young Buc. Seven Oaks has a history of bringing golfers to their knees with its creek lined fairways and its lightning fast greens. Sova handled the greens beautifully though, especially considering the cold temperatures, rain and wind.
Sova’s final hole of the tournament may have been his best. After an iron from the tee and a beautifully struck hybrid, Sova wedged his ball to about 45 feet behind the hole. He was disappointed with the wedge, but not with his final putt which snaked its way down the slope, turned sideways at the end, hung on the lip, and dropped in as Chris was walking toward the hole. The gallery surrounding the green erupted in cheer.
A fitting end to two really great rounds of golf. Look for Sova to continue his solid play next weekend at the state tourney.
