Head coach Brandi Ostrander and the Laker field hockey team was unable to overcome an early 4-0 deficit as they fell to non-conference William Smith 8-1 on Tuesday in Geneva. Brittany Roetzer (Jr., Akron, NY) scored the lone goal for Oswego State early in the second half as the Lakers fell to 1-1 overall.

Oswego State was forced to play from behind almost immediately as Kiersten Hamilton scored the first William Smith goal 1:49 into the contest. The Herons went on to score three more goals over the next 15 minutes to grab a commanding 4-0 lead at the 15:56 mark, which was where the score stood at halftime.

The Lakers showed a renewed intensity at the start of the second half resulting in a breakaway goal by Brittany Roetzer less than three minutes into the new frame. However, William Smith countered 27 seconds later with a Tempe Newson goal to take a 5-1 lead. The Herons tacked on three more goals before the end of the period for the 8-1 victory.

Oswego State was outshot 33-6 during the contest as Laker goaltender Jamie Scharfe (Jr., Webster, NY) suffered the loss after making 10 saves. The Lakers, who are 1-1 overall, will face Utica on Wednesday, Sep. 9 at 5 p.m. in Utica.
