OSWEGO, N.Y. – A pair of freshman hooked up in the final three minutes to lead the Oswego State men’s soccer team to a 1-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan on Tuesday night at Laker Field.
Ryan Purdy[1] (Fr., Stormville, N.Y.) tucked a shot inside the near post following a 30-yard pass from Zack Saccocio[2] (Fr., Schenectady, N.Y.) for the lone goal of the game.
The goal continued a trend that now has the freshmen on the team accounting for 15 of the 25 points this season.
Not to be forgotten, P.J. Goodwin[3] (Jr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) posted his second straight shutout with three saves, including a one-on-one diving save midway through the second half.
“It should have been 1-0 them on that, there is no excuse to miss that except a great play,” said coach Bob Friske[4]. “Good goalies make the saves they are suppose to, great goalies make exceptional ones.”
Both teams had three shots on goal in a game that was mostly played in the midfield, but the Lakers did have one goal waved off in the first half. Lucas Pettit[5] (Sr., Scipio Center, N.Y.) took a shot that was saved, but the Lakers put the rebound in the net before the goal was waved off by an offisides call.
The Lakers (4-1) controlled the first half, outshooting the Raiders (2-4) 5-0 in the period and turned that domination into the 1-0 win.
Oswego State plays the third of fifth straight home games on Saturday when it hosts RIT (2-1-1) at 1 p.m. at Laker Field.
