OSWEGO – On Tuesday night, the OHS Girls Hockey team traveled to Skaneateles to take on the defending Section III and State Champion Lakers.

The Bucs jumped out to a great start, scoring just 18 seconds into the contest.

Stephanie Kubis entered the Skaneateles zone, got deep into the offensive zone and then fed defenseman Monica Cahill at the point, who blasted a slap shot past Skaneateles keeper Jessica Smith.

The Bucs kept the pressure up, but were unable to tally their second goal , Hannah Koster and Stephanie Kubis were both denied early chances by Smith.

Skaneateles got on the board with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first, Megan Teachout skated through the Oswego defense and beat Ashley Finch to make it 1-1.

Skaneateles went up for good when Heather Tanzella took a shot from the side boards that slid past Finch, with 39 seconds left in the first.

Coach Mark Fierro said, “We never really recovered from that late first period goal. We were battling hard and to give up a soft goal like that took the wind out of our sails.”

In the second, Teachout scored two more goals. Her first tally of the period saw her once again skating again through the Oswego defense, and her third goal of the game was scored at the end of a 3 on 0, where the Oswego defense got caught on a bad change.

“We can’t make mental errors against a very good team and expect success,” Fierro said of the bad change.

The third period was fairly even with both teams registering 9 shots on goal. Teachout got her 4th of the game with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Finch finished with 24 saves, Smith from Skaneateles had 18.

Fierro said, “That was a very good Skaneateles team.If we are going to give them a contest, we need to pick up the pace of our play and limit our mistakes. We had some good things that happened, but unfortunately we had difficulty in shutting down their top scorer. We need to do a better job of that next time”

Oswego’s next contest is at Ithaca Tuesday, December 12.
