Fulton, NY – For those with a mental diagnosis developing and enhancing life skills can be a challenge. The Step By Step Program at Catholic Charities is making that challenge a little easier with a series of four Life Skills Development workshops.
Each workshop will focus on a specific life skill that is essential to living independently.
Scheduled to begin October 1, the workshop will continue for four consecutive weeks. Each workshop will be held Tuesday, from 5:00 to 5:45 p.m. at the Step By Step Wellness Program offices inside Catholic Charities at 365 W. First St.
According to Step By Step Wellness program Coordinator, Pam Peeling, community members with a mental health diagnosis are invited to attend any or all of the workshops.
“While the workshops are somewhat related, each is unique to its subject. Community members can attend the workshops that most relevant to them or all of them if they wish,” said Peeling.
Topics covered in the Life Skills workshop include:
Week 1, October 1 – Nutrition – Learn the basics of good nutrition, from the USDA’s “My plate” program; receive information regarding food pantries and free food giveaways, as well as access to other nutritional information in Oswego County.
Week 2, October 8 – Job Readiness – Facilitated by staff of Oswego County Workforce NY the workshop will feature a presentation regarding the services and assistance that Oswego County Workforce offers such as job searching, job readiness, and more.
Week 3, October, 15 – Money Management and Budgeting – Facilitated by staff from Empower Federal Credit Union, the workshop will discuss skills and offer materials on balancing a checkbook, basic money management, and budgeting.
Week 4, October 22 – Parenting basics – Facilitated by Step By Step staff members this workshop will focus on essential skills that every parent should know.

Those wishing to attend are urged to call Pam Peeling at 315-598-3980, ext. 251 and are welcome to arrive early to meet the Step By Step staff and tour the facilities.
“If transportation is an issue, please let us know. We are happy to assist and want everyone who would like to attend be able to. Lack of transportation should not be a reason for attending any or all of these groups, ” added Peeling.
A program of Catholic Charities of Oswego County, the Step By Step Wellness program uses a wellness recovery model that provides an array of services to adults diagnosed with a mental illness.
Step By Step programming, which includes workshops, exercise classes, life enrichment classes, fun time, and more, is designed to support clients with their recovery, promote wellness, and combat the stigma of mental illness.
“These programs help individuals increase their self-esteem, establish group affiliations, and maintain independence in the community,” added Peeling.
Catholic Charities of Oswego County serves all people in need regardless of their religious affiliation.
Primary funding sources for Catholic Charities of Oswego County’s programs are the United Way of Greater Oswego County, the Diocesan Hope Appeal, the County of Oswego and private donations by individuals and local companies and organizations.
