As a peer generalist, Hart promotes wellness and provides person-entered recovery-services for clients through individual and group-based support.  He also serves as an advocate for clients and helps to facilitate access to appropriate services and assist with communication between clients and other service providers who may help them achieve their goals.

A native of Kansas, Hart has worked throughout the country and most recently worked at the Denver Rescue Mission in Denver, Colorado, as a house manager for their drug and alcohol rehabilitation program.

“I have always found that working in the human services field is very rewarding.  I enjoy helping people and I am excited to be working with the Step By Step Wellness program.  It is a very positive atmosphere and the support groups, activities, and guest speakers that the program provides are a tremendous benefit to our clients,” said Hart.

In addition to assisting with and leading some of the many support groups and activities that the Step By Step Wellness program offers Hart is looking to add yet another support group to the program.

“Being a musician, I am looking forward to establishing a music based support group. I am beginning to collect instruments and would welcome donations,” said Hart.

“Derrick is a welcome addition to our staff,” said Peeling.  “His past experiences and his understanding of the recovery process for those diagnosed with a mental illness will serve him well in his new position.  His positive attitude and fresh ideas are appreciated by our clients.”

The Step By Step Wellness program currently serves more than 100 clients, with 40 to 50 individuals visiting each week and many more who attend the various support groups and special presentations.

“The Step By Step program fills a definite need in our community,” added Peeling. “It provides our clients with a place to go where they are welcomed and appreciated. This program is for them, they get to meet new friends, share their experiences and work together to reach their goals. They are like a family and we are happy to have them here. We enjoy their company, understand their unique needs and enjoy helping them meet those needs.”
