Steve Poirier Shows The Way In The Patriot Sprint Tour; Tim Sears Jr. Doubles up At The Fulton Speedway

By Dave Medler
FULTON, NY  – Saturday night the Fulton Speedway opened the 2012 season with a bang on A-Verdi Storage Containers night. Steve Poirier out of Quebec bested a stout field of  42 of the best 360 Sprint car drivers in the Northeast in round one of the Patriot Sprint Tour, while Tim Sears Jr. grabbed the checkers in both the NAPA Late Models and SUNY Canton Sportsman.

Josh Weller and Tommy Wickham led the Patriot Sprint Tour down to the green flag to start the 25 lap A-Main with Weller grabbing the early advantage. Weller’s lead would be short lived as he and Wickham made racing contact in turn one on lap two. The contact ended Weller’s night as he was towed pit side with front end damage.

When the green came back out Wickham would pace the field, but his lead was short lived as Poirier was able to blast around Wickham on lap 6 and take command of the race.

Once out front nobody had anything for Poirier, as he put his Eagle chassis on cruise control as he was able to put lapped cars between himself and the rest of the field for the next 15 consecutive green flag laps, till the caution would fly for the final time. Even with the yellow to tighten the field up nobody would challenge Poirier to the finish.

Poirier didn’t even know if he would be able to race Saturday night after injuring his knee in a snowmobile race that might put his season on hold.

“I didn’t even know if I could come here today,” said Poirier about the injury. “I don’t really notice it when I am in the car but I will definitely feel it tomorrow.”

Tommy Wickham would go unchallenged in the second spot posting his best ever Patriot Sprint Tour finish.

The battle from third through sixth had the fans on the edge of their seat between Chuck Hebing, Bryan Howland, Larry Wight and Bobby Breen right down to the checkers.

The talk of the fans was about Larry Wight. Wight who had just one start in his career in a Sprint Car, which was in 2011 where he finished in the top-five at Fulton Speedway in a Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints event.

Wight started 15th and thrilled the fans with his driving style, even finishing the last two-laps with the throttle wide open when a chunk of clay became stuck in the throttle linkage.

The Gypsum Express No.99L team has purchased a car for the 2012 season.  Look for Wight to compete in around 15 sprint car events.

Tim Sears Jr grabbed the lead early on in the 15 lap NAPA Late Model feature and cruised to the easy win. Sean Beardsley, Alan Fink, Brandon Kidd and Mike Trapp chased Sears across the line.

In the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature Jordan Bennett and Tim Sears Jr. would battle for the top-spot early on with Sears making a power move around Bennett exiting turn for to be scored the new leader on lap-six.

Once in the lead, Sears moved to the bottom of the speedway to put his second feature win on the day in the record books. Jordan Bennett, Greg Mrzywka, Gregg Carner, Bob Bennett rounded out the top- five.

With the wins in the SUNY Canton Sportsman and NAPA Late Models, Sears secured qualifying spots in the season ending Sunoco Ethanol Plant Outlaw 200 weekend September 28-29.
