Children who complete each event in the Summer Fitness Challenge are entered to win the grand prize – a scooter, generously provided by Murdock’s Bicycles & Sports.

Autumn Mintonye, a member of the Harborfest Children’s Committee, said, “Oswego County has the highest student obesity rate in the state, at 38 percent. Partially because of this and to create excitement for Harborfest in the days leading up to the festival, we’ve created a series of small events for children, based around physical activity. Our goal is to get children up and moving, and really enjoying themselves in this gorgeous weather.”

The first of four events will be held on July 6 at 6 p.m., where young participants are invited to kick off the Summer Fitness Challenge – literally – by participating in a kickball game in Breitbeck Park.

Following that, another event will be held on July 13 at 6 p.m., with a Soulhooping workshop featuring instructor Heather Plyer, also at 6 p.m.

On July 20, a series of fun fitness activities will take place prior to the Movies in the Park event in East Park, which is sponsored by the Oswego County Federal Credit Union and the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau, at 6:30 p.m.

The final event in the Summer Fitness Challenge will take place during Harborfest, on July 30 in West Park (Children’s Park).

At noon, children are invited to exert body and mind as they exercise their way through the Story Walk.

Following completion of each challenge, participants will receive a small prize. A child must participate in all challenges to be entered to win the grand prize scooter.
