Assemblyman Will Barclay (R,C,Iâ€â€Pulaski) recently met with the 2009 summer reading challengers for a harvest reading event at the Oswego Public Library. The annual Summer Reading Challenge encourages children to read with their parents or by themselves for at least 15 minutes each day during the months of July and August, while children are on summer vacation from school. If completed, children receive a New York State Assembly Excellence in Reading certificate.
About 70 kids were awarded certificates this year in the 124th Assembly District. “I always enjoy receiving the calendars and reading what children’s favorite books are,†said Barclay.
Children who attended the reading party decorated a pumpkin, took home a goody bag and listened to a story read by Assemblyman Barclay.
“I’d like to thank all of the librarians and reading teachers throughout the district who help promote the reading challenge by distributing calendars and instilling a lifelong love of books in so many children. I’d also like to thank all of the parents who encourage their children to read for leisure at home. Study after study shows that children who read for leisure do better academically,†said Barclay.
“I’d also like to thank Sorbello Farms, Struppler’s Big M in Fulton and the Oswego Public Library for helping to make our first annual reading party a success,†said Barclay.
