SUNY Oswego to Partner with YMCA on Sustainability Program

This winter the SUNY Oswego Office of Business and Community Relations will partner with the Oswego YMCA to provide a second Citizens Academy on Sustainability for the greater Oswego Community.

A Citizens Academy is an interactive, educational program that informs citizens about the constituent elements of a healthy and sustainable community. Weekly topics will include ecological principles, sustainable food, sustainable buying, water & energy efficiency, and sustainable communities.

“This is an exciting partnership between SUNY Oswego and the Oswego YMCA” said Thad Mantaro, assistant director at the Office of Business and Community Relations. “We’re very happy to join with the YMCA and offer this program to both Y members and the larger Oswego Community.”

Meetings will occur at the YMCA Wednesday evenings starting January 6th and running until February 24th from 5:30-7:00 pm. The program will follow a discussion group format and a $10 fee will be charged for the class and materials. Pre-registration is required through the Office of Business and Community Relations.

“SUNY Oswego is committed to supporting community based sustainability programming, so the entire program fee is just $10,” said Mantaro. “The YMCA has also generously offered to provide childcare for free to all those enrolled in the program during classes, and YMCA membership is not required to participate.”

Those who complete the program will receive a certificate of participation, and information on how to become engaged with local sustainability activities.
