OSWEGO — Malachi “Mal” Reardon, SUNY Oswego building trades manager and a 35-year employee of the college, is a recipient of the 2012 SUNY Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in the Classified Service.
Mary DePentu, director of facilities maintenance and operations at SUNY Oswego, said that whether she approached support staff, his colleagues or professional staff about nominating Reardon for the honor, she received similar reactions: “a smile, a nod of agreement and a word of ‘well-deserved.'”
Responsible for three departments — building trades construction, building trades finishes and the furniture shop — Reardon and his team help maintain 3 million square feet of building space on campus.
“And to hear their description of Mal, the same positive terms resonate: always goes above and beyond, calm demeanor, leads by example, supports his staff, organized, fair and keeps everyone in the loop,” DePentu wrote in recommending Reardon’s nomination for the statewide award.
DePentu provided specific examples of Reardon’s diligence, creativity and helpfulness to employees, including research and implementation of new products and procedures to make facilities tasks easier, faster and less costly.
