Reading Council To Host Dear Jo Author
Dear Jo is a critically acclaimed novel about a girl whose best friend is abducted by an online predator. The award-winning author Christina Kilbourne will give a presentation June 7 at the Tavern on the Lock. Christina wrote the first draft of Dear Jo at a novel writing marathon to raise money for adult literacy.

Mayor Breaks Council Tie, OK’s Harborfest Midway Site
Mayor Randy Bateman cast the tie-breaking vote at Monday night’s Common Council meeting regarding the location of the Harborfest midway. Tom Van Schaack, executive director of Harborfest, requested to use the marina parking lot along Lake Street for the midway again this year.

Committee Clears The Way For Tall Ships, Midway
At its meeting this week, the Physical Services Committee paved the way for three tall ships to visit the Port City next month. The full council will also consider allowing Harborfest to use the same location as last year for its midway.

Oswego Council To Consider Kan Jam Request
At this week’s meeting of the Physical Services Committee, councilors paved the way for a league for a new sport to take the field in Oswego this summer. The organizer requested use of space in Fort Ontario Park for an organized league in a recreational game called Kan Jam.

SAFER Grant Debate Continues To Burn
The grant could save the city thousands. However, in year three of the grant, the city’s share would be more than $729,000. The city would also have to fund the additional firefighters after that; or it could lay them off after the grant is done. Whether to find ways to make up the revenue has been a hot button issue between councilors and the fire department.

As past president, former board member, and a continuing long-time volunteer of Harborfest, I would like to respond to Councilor Bill Sharkey’s comment in Tuesday’s article wherein he states “Harborfest is not going to support the city of Oswego, but we are asked to support them…”

Oswego Council Maintains Support For Harborfest
Councilors voted 5-2 Monday night to transfer more than $77,000 into overtime accounts for this summer’s Harborfest. However, even those in favor of the move agreed something has to change next year in light of the city’s financial situation.
