More Mosquitoes Test Positive For EEE – County Plans Aerial Spraying
The Oswego County Health Department has been notified that four more pools of mosquitoes, collected from the Toad Harbor/Big Bay Swamp area on the north shore of Oneida Lake, have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis. Public Health Director Dr. Dennis Norfleet said the virus has spread from a species of mosquito that feeds on birds to a species that bites humans, As a result, Oswego County is preparing to conduct aerial spraying of the Toad Harbor and Big Bay swamps by the middle of or late next week.

County lawmakers have decided to seek more information from Bion Environmental Technologies before making any decisions regarding the companies plan to start a business somewhere in the county. If Bion’s slaughterhouse plan becomes a reality, it would bring more than 70,000 head of beef cattle into the county.

Oswego County Legislature Approves Additional Funds, Staffing For DSS
Legislators approved accepting a $500,000 state grant for DSS. The money will be used for improving supervisory practices, increasing staff and enhanced and training.
Youth Court Training Under Way
The ranks of Oswego County’s Youth Court could swell by nearly two dozen soon. Teens from across the county are taking part in YC training this week. Youth Court is a recognized community diversion program aimed at keeping young offenders out of Family Court.
