New Camp Hollis Director Passionate About His Work

Youth Bureau Director Kathleen Fenlon and Recreation and Youth Development Coordinator Brandon Morey recently visited Camp Hollis in the Town of Oswego to plan for the 2011 camping season.“Camp Hollis is a landmark for Oswego County. It really is. I am glad to be a part of it,” says Brandon Morey. There are certain things that make a camp a camp and should never be changed, never ever, he said, adding he hopes to continue and enhance Camp Hollis’ tradition for many years to come.

Proposed NYS Program Grant May Hurt Local Youth Bureau Programming

At Thursday’s meeting, the Oswego County Legislature will ask the state to reconsider instituting a program that would be detrimental to upstate youth. “Youth Bureau funding would be eliminated in many counties, which would promote inequities in prevention and positive youth development services across the state. It is economically not prudent to only support youth when they are at the doorstep of the child welfare and/or the juvenile justice system,” the director of the local Youth Bureau said.

United Way Honors Its Life Blood – Volunteers

Volunteers are the life blood of the United Way, usually toiling away behind the scenes. However, they were center stage Wednesday at the organization’s annual meeting. Melanie Trexler, executive director of the United Way of Greater Oswego County, gave a heart-felt thank you to all the dedicated individuals who joined together to make the 2010 – 2011 United Way campaign a success. They just passed 90% of their goal and there is still plenty of time left for you to contribute.

Legislators Updated On 911 Enhancements, 5-Year plan

County legislators recently were updated on the work that’s under way on several of the new radio towers that will play a key role in upgrading Oswego County’s emergency radio communications system. The new interoperable radio system will be used by emergency responders to answer calls in all areas of the county – and across county lines. It will provide 97 percent coverage for portable radios used by emergency responders.

Oswego County Sheriff’s Department Recognized

Oswego County Sheriff’s Department is one of the 18 out of the state’s 62 counties that qualified for civil accreditation, according to Peter Kehoe, counsel and executive director of the NYS Sheriffs’ Association. To achieve accreditation, requires that the Civil Office meets a very strict set of standards set by experts in the field of civil process, he said.

Lake Effect Snows Hammer County

snow shoveling - roofUPDATED: As of 4:15 p.m. Thursday, Mayor Randy Bateman had lifted the  Winter Parking Advisory. If it is at all possible, Mayor Bateman is asking residents to still continue not to park on city streets. “It makes it easier for the Department of Works to clear our streets, especially the smaller ones, for emergency vehicles,” he explained.
