Fulton Sixth Graders Write About Hometown Hero

Sixth graders across the Fulton City School District recently completed a mini unit on Medal of Honor recipients and they were surprised to learn that a native Fultonian earned that medal on June 6 1944. Carlton W. Barrett was born and raised in Fulton and joined the Army in 1940. On D-Day, he found himself on the beaches of Normandy, France, under withering fire in conditions reminiscent of the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan.

D-Day Anniversary Commemorated At Marine Museum

A family takes a tour of the LT-5. On the tour everything from the kitchen to the engine room could be visited.

“This weekend is about commemorating the 67th anniversary of D-Day, in which our national historic landmark tugboat, the LT-5, participated,” said Mercedes Niess, executive director of the museum. “We’re recognizing not only the veterans of our county but also this tugboat as well.”

Marine Museum To Commemorate D-Day

Members of the Central New York re-enactment group living portraying the 'A' Company, 5th Ranger Battalion during their service in Europe from 1944-45.

The event will be multifaceted, centering around an unveiling of the new indoor exhibit focusing on the history and significance of the National Historic Landmark Tug , LT-5, during World War II and afterwards. The vessel is proudly berthed on the west pier by the Museum, in Oswego’s Historic Maritime District.
