A few sprinkles didn’t deter a large crowd from turning out to witness the hour-long program. The British Flag was lowered and the American Flag was raised over Fort Ontario as the audience learned about the history of the flag and the fort.
Students in the Phoenix Central School District spent the day Friday learning about the way things were during the annual Canal Day of Phoenix. This year marked the 22nd year of the annual “history lesson.”
“Remember this number – 1,961,680. That is the number we should say thanks to for this day of summer fun,” said George Hoffman, the MC for Oswego’s Memorial Day observance. That is the number of veterans killed in action during our nation’s wars, he pointed out. To that, he added 601,710 POWs and 161,489 MIA.
Nearly three dozen students from around the county had the opportunity to see county government in action Thursday during the annual Government Day. Organized each year through Cornell Cooperative Extension, the day serves each year as an opportunity for middle school students to spend the day with a legislator and take part in the process of Oswego County government.
Gathered at the veterans monument across from city hall, the Fulton Veterans Council hosted a ceremony Sunday to honor the veterans who have gone to war to defend the country’s freedoms. The consistent message from all: Take the time to thank a veteran.
