Increase In Calls Seen At County DSS
We are projecting more than 3,000 reports for the year if the pace of reports continues at this level. Last year we ended with 2,757. This is a 9.4 percent increase over 2009 and a 31.5 percent increase over the last two years. We’re averaging about 251 reports a month, that’s pretty significant, the commissioner said.

Schumer: Erin’s Law Will Be A Boon To CPS
The legislation, to be introduced in the US Senate, is aimed at creating a federal program to assist areas such as Oswego County in hiring additional social service workers for child protection. The legislation is inspired by Erin Maxwell.

Schumer To Push Legislation Aimed At Preventing Another Erin Maxwell Case
Schumer’s plan would provide federal grants to social services agencies so they can hire enough caseworkers to handle suspected cases of abuse or neglect. Schumer’s press release notes, “Despite three reports of abuse referred to the Oswego Country Department of Social Services and their knowledge of the deplorable living conditions, no effort was made to remove Erin from her home or adequately monitor her situation.”

County Approves Formation Of Citizens’ Council
The mission of the council will be to facilitate an open door policy for communication between the public and the county’s Child Protective Services. The county legislature also approved accepting funding to help battle the H1N1 flu.
