Today (Sept. 21), the Governor announced the nomination of 27 properties to the State and National Registers of Historic Places. Nominated in Oswego is the Fort Ontario Military Reservation. The nomination expands and replaces an earlier National Register listing to obtain a more accurate and inclusive boundary more reflective of the fort’s military history.
More than 100 years ago the city of Fulton’s strategic location on the Oswego River and the success of the Erie Canal system played a major role in the city’s growth as factories were built and commerce flourished along the Erie Canal. The newly renovated building adds more than 14,000 square feet of space to the library. It also offers several other updates. Tania Werbizky of the Preservation League of New York State congratulated everyone on a job well done in saving and enhancing the building. A few sprinkles didn’t deter a large crowd from turning out to witness the hour-long program. The British Flag was lowered and the American Flag was raised over Fort Ontario as the audience learned about the history of the flag and the fort.
